Before you compare models, answer three questions: how much coffee you make, how hands-on you want to be, and how you take it.

1. Pick a brewing style

TypeBest forTrade-offs
Automatic dripHouseholds, convenience, multiple cupsQuality varies a lot between models
Single-serve podSpeed and variety, one cup at a timeOngoing pod cost and waste; less flavor control
Pour-overFlavor clarity, coffee hobbyistsHands-on; needs a kettle and some practice
French pressRich, full-bodied coffee; simplicitySome sediment; must decant to avoid over-extraction
AeroPressOne strong cup, travelSmall batches
Espresso machineEspresso and milk drinksBigger investment and learning curve; needs a good grinder

2. What "SCA certified" means

The Specialty Coffee Association certifies home brewers that meet standards for brew temperature, brew time and extraction. It's a useful shortcut: a certified drip machine has been shown to brew within the range coffee professionals consider ideal, roughly 195–205°F (90–96°C).

3. Features worth paying for

  • Even showerhead so all the grounds are saturated.
  • Thermal carafe if coffee sits for a while; hot plates can make coffee taste "cooked."
  • Small-batch setting if you sometimes brew less than a full pot.
  • Programmable timer if you want coffee ready when you wake up.
  • Removable reservoir for easier filling.

4. Features you can skip

  • Lots of strength modes (adjust your ratio instead)
  • App connectivity, for most people
  • Built-in blade grinders (a separate burr grinder is better)

5. Capacity: what "cups" really means

Manufacturers usually count a "cup" as about 5 fluid ounces, not a full mug. A "12-cup" maker fills roughly five to six standard mugs.

6. Think about upkeep

Look for dishwasher-safe or easy-to-reach parts, and plan to descale regularly. See how to descale.
